Over-fishing in the Great Lakes: the context and history of the controversy

Abstract: The issue of over-fishing has spawned controversy in the Laurentian Great Lakes since the early 1800s. Aboriginal, domestic, commercial food, aquacultural and recreational fisheries have experienced a number of different types of over-fishing that have contributed to the fishing-up sequence in the lakes. Some effects of fish habitat destruction by many environmental abuses interacted synergistically with inappropriate fishing practices. The fish communities near larger settled areas ‘hit the wall’ ecologically… Show more

“…During the 20th century, human-mediated effects such as overfishing, pollution, habitat degradation and invasive species directly affected the Great Lakes (Mills et al, 1994;Regier et al, 1999). These changes led to population declines and extinctions of many coregonines (Smith, 1968).…”

“…Several studies have been carried out on the impact of tourism based recreational fisheries worldwide (Coleman et al 2004;Steven and Cowx 2006;Cowx et al 2010) suggesting that tourism fishing is detrimental for fish conservation approaches (Regier et al,1999;Westera et al 2003). This fact, in general, has been acceptable.…”

“…), and passenger pigeon ( Ectopistes migratorius ), lesser known are the many examples of fish, where 57 taxa have become extinct between 1898 and 2006 (Burkhead 2012 ). As described by Regier et al ( 1999 ), fish communities near larger settled areas in the Laurentian Great Lakes “hit the wall” ecologically beginning in the late 1800s as a result of over-fishing. Although overfishing remains near all-time lows in the USA at present (NOAA 2021 ), the historical impact has been significant (Smith 1968 ; Regier et al 1999 ; Jackson et al 2001 ).…”
