Over 15% Efficiency in Ternary Organic Solar Cells by Enhanced Charge Transport and Reduced Energy Loss

Abstract: In this study, an efficient ternary bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cell (OSC) is demonstrated by incorporating two acceptors, PC61BM and ITC6-4F, with a polymer donor (PM6). This reveals that the addition of PC61BM not only enhances the electron mobility of the derived BHJ blend but also facilitates exciton dissociation, resulting in a more balanced charge transport alongside with reduced trap-assisted charge recombination. Consequently, as compared to the pristine PM6/ITC6-4F device, the optimal tern… Show more

“…Thus the PBDB-T:MeIC1:Y16 ternary solar cell affords a PCE of 14.11% with an enhanced J SC of 22.76 mA cm −2 . [75] Besides the charge transfer and energy transfer mechanism, [76][77][78] the third component can also elevate the performance via morphology control, [79][80][81][82][83][84] which will be discussed in the next part of morphology control.…”

“…The energy loss (E loss ) in the PSCs is estimated from E loss = E gopt -qV OC , where E gopt is calculated from the onset of the EQE spectra of the devices. 75,76 The values of E loss are listed in Table 1. The E loss value for the ternary PSC is higher than that of P:Cz-IC and smaller than that of the P:PC 71 BM based devices, which is consistent with the values of V OC observed in the PSCs.…”

“…The incorporation of FA into binary OPVs based on NFA can improve the electron mobility due to the outperformed electron mobility of FAs, further optimizing μ h /μ e and reducing recombination, consistent with a high FF. [75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86] Besides that, the exciton dissociation is also enhanced, to boost the photoinduced current via the enlarged D/A interface. The wide application of the ternary strategy in many different binary systems based on NFA can support that the use of FA as the third component can improve device efficiency.…”
