ABSTRACT. The morphology of the ovaries in Uca rapax (Smith, 1870) was described based on macroscopic and microscopic analysis. Females were collected in Itamambuca mangrove, Ubatuba, state of São Paulo, Brazil. In the laboratory, 18 females had their ovaries removed and prepared for histology. Each gonad developmental stage was previously determined based on external and macroscopic morphology and afterwards each stage was microscopically described. The ovaries of U. rapax showed a pronounced macroscopic differentiation in size and coloration with the maturation of the gonad, with six ovarian developmental stages: immature, rudimentary, developing, developed, advanced and spent. During the vitellogenesis, the amount of oocytes in secondary stage increases in the ovary, resulting in a change in coloration of the gonad. Oogonias, primary oocytes, secondary oocytes and follicular cells were histologically described and measured. In female's ovaries of U. rapax the modifications observed in the oocytes during the process of gonad maturation are similar to descriptions of gonads of other females of brachyuran crustaceans. The similarities are specially found in the morphological changes in the reproductive cells, and also in the presence and arrange of follicle cells during the process of ovary maturation. When external morphological characteristics of the gonads were compared to histological descriptions, it was possible to observe modifications that characterize the process in different developmental stages throughout the ovarian cycle and, consequently, the macroscopic classification of gonad stages agree with the modifications of the reproductive cells. Desenvolvimento da gônada em fêmeas do caranguejo-violinistaUca rapax (Crustacea, Brachyura, Ocypodidae) utilizando técnicas macro e microscópicas. A morfologia dos ovários de Uca rapax foi descrita baseada nas análises macroscópica e microscópica. As fêmeas foram coletadas no manguezal de Itamambuca, Ubatuba, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. No laboratório, os ovários de 18 fêmeas foram retirados e preparados para histologia. Os estágios gonadais foram caracterizados previamente por meio de análises da morfologia externa e macroscopia e posteriormente cada estágio foi descrito microscopicamente. Os ovários das fêmeas de U. rapax apresentaram uma diferenciação macroscópica pronunciada no tamanho e coloração durante o processo de maturação, sendo caracterizados seis estágios de desenvolvimento ovariano: imaturo, rudimentar, em desenvolvimento, desenvolvido, avançado e esgotado. Microscopicamente, estes estágios diferiram quanto ao tamanho, cor e proporção de oogônias e oócitos presentes. ABSTRACT:Competitive ELISA using a combination of monoclonal antibodies specific to vitellin subunits was used to monitor the fluctuation of haemolymph vitellogenin levels in Penaeus monodon during ovarian development induced by bilateral eyestalk-ablation and to monitor the effect of eyestalk extract injection in prawn with developing ovary. The haemolymph vitellogenin levels were undetectable in the prawn with ovary at the resting stage but elevated sharply when the ovary began to develop, remained high during the ovary developing into ripe stage then fell to the low levels before spawning and spent stages. The result from injection of eyestalk extract into prawn with developing ovary revealed that haemolymph vitellogenin levels elevated sharply within 2 hr, reached the maximal levels and remained high during 4-10 hr, then declined slightly at 24 hr. This response directly depended on the amount of injected eyestalk extract and the response was species specific. The application of eyestalk extract from Metapenaeus affinis demonstrated the same stimulatory effect but was less potent whereas the eyestalk extract from Macrobrachium rosenbergii did not cause any changes in haemolymph vitellogenin levels. Therefore, the assay is specific and provides an indicator to monitor the activity of the putative gonad inhibiting hormone by assaying the alteration of vitellogenin levels.

The reproductive cycle of Astacus astacus was described by the external observation of the gonads, recording changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and by the histological analysis of the reproductive organs. A total of 37 males and 13 females of Astacus astacus were collected from the Vukovina gravel pit located at northwest Croatia from May 2003 until January 2004. All crayfish were mature with total body lengths between 7.84 and 13.7 cm and weights between 16 and 125 g. There was a pronounced difference between the GSI values of the sexes. GSI fluctuated within a very small range (between 0.2 and 1.5%) in males while in females it increased up to 12.3% during the mating season. The external appearance of the testes and ovaries during the reproductive cycle was compared with the histological sections of germ cells in the testes, the vas deferens and ovaries. Besides the germinative cells, the morphological changes in testis and vasa deferentia of A. astacus extended also to the connective tissue and secretory epithelium. The maturation of germinative cells was synchronized, both in testes and ovaries. Key-words:Astacus astacus, reproductive cycle, gonadosomatic index, gonads, histology. LES CHANGEMENTS MORPHOLOGIQUES DES GONADES D'ASTACUS ASTACUS PENDANT LE CYCLE REPRODUCTIF RÉSUMÉLe cycle reproductif d'Astacus astacus a été décrit par l'observation externe des gonades, en enregistrant les changements de l'indexe gonadosomatique (GSI), et par l'analyse histologique des organes reproductifs. De mai 2003 à janvier 2004, 37 mâles et 13 femelles d'Astacus astacus ont prélevées dans une mine de gravier près de Vukovina qui se trouve au Nord Ouest de la Croatie. Toutes les écrevisses récoltées étaient mûres, mesuraient de 7,84 à 13,7 cm de longueur totale et pesaient de 16 à 125 g. Il y a une différence accentuée entre les valeurs de GSI des deux sexes. Chez les mâles les valeurs de GSI ont oscillé sur une toute petite amplitude (entre 0,2 et 1,5%) tandis que chez les femelles il a atteint 12,3% pendant la période reproductive. L'apparence externe des testicules et des ovaires pendant le cycle reproductif a été comparée aux coupes histologiques des cellules germinatives dans les testicules, les canaux déférents et les ovaires. Des changements morphologiques sont observés sur les testicules, les canaux déférents et les ovaires et s'étendent au tissu connectif et à l'épithélium sécréteur. La maturation des cellules germinatives est synchronisée dans les testicules aussi bien que dans les ovaires.
