Ovarian Masses: Changing Clinico Histopathological Trends

Abstract: Results Incidence of ovarian masses was 6.9 %. Among 205 cases, 68 % were neoplastic. Among the neoplasms, 87.8 % were benign, 10 % malignant, and 2.2 % borderline. Mean ages of malignant and benign neoplasm were 41 and 39 years, respectively. 42.9 % malignant tumors presented with non-specific abdominal and constitutional symptoms. Serous cystadenoma was the commonest benign tumor (67 %) followed by Mucinous (19 %) and Dermoid (11.6 %). Most common malignant ovarian tumor was Serous cystadenocarcinoma (42.9 %… Show more

“…Out of the benign tumours, serous cystadenoma accounted for 49%; mucinous cystadenoma 39%; germ cell tumours 7.3%; sex cord tumours 4.9% which was comparable to study done by Pilli et al but differs from Mondel et al and Jha et al [9][10][11] In our study, mucinous tumours were on the rising trend comparable to the study done by Jha et al 10 Of all the malignant tumours serous cystadenocacinoma accounted for 50% followed by mucinous cystadenocarcinoma 33.3% which is comparable to study done by Sharadha et al and Pilli et al 8,9 All the malignant ovarian tumours were presented between 30-60 yrs of age and the maximum occurrence was between 41-50 yrs. One case of dysgerminoma presented at 35 yrs of age.…”

“…Saradha SO et al in a study reported that parity is not a significant risk factor ovarian neoplasm. 7 In the present study among the benign tumors 27.27% case were nulliparous and among the malignant tumors 10.03% were nulliparous.…”

“…Sharadha et al in a study reported that abdominal pain followed by abnormal menstrual pattern was the predominant presenting symptom in patients with both non neoplastic and benign ovarian masses on the contrary. 7 Malignant group predominantly presented with vague abdominal symptoms 42.9%, with pain abdomen only in 35.7%. Gray Levi et al described 15% of reproductive age patients present with menstrual abnormalities.…”

“…These findings are in accordance to other studies. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][19][20][21] Benign lesions were more common in 30-40 years, and malignant lesions in 40-59 years age group similar to studies of Ameena, Jha. 8,20 The commonest neoplasms were epithelial tumours seen 12-80 years with peak age at 41-50 yrs.…”

“…In our study follicularcysts (37.15%) were most common followed by simple serous(30%), endometriotic cysts (9.37%), corpusluteal cysts (7.80%). In other studies luteal cysts, endometriotic cysts were common followed by simple serous cyst, [8][9][10] follicular and corpus luteal cysts were common followed by serous cysts. 11,13 Twisted ovarian cyst was commonest surgical emergency in 23 cases (5.91%) followed by cyst rupture and haemoperitoneum (3.12%).…”
