Ovarian Function in the Elephant: Luteinizing Hormone and Progesterone Cycles in African and Asian Elephants1

Abstract: Serum samples were collected weekly for 3 yr from two female African elephants, for 18 mo from two other female African elephants, and for 2 yr from two female Asian elephants. Animals were not sedated at the time of blood collection. Ovarian cycles, characterized by changes in progesterone and immunoreactive luteinizing hormone (ILH) concentrations, averaged 15.9 +/- 0.6 wk (N = 25) for African females and 14.7 +/- 0.5 wk for Asian females (N = 10). The length of the active luteal phase averaged 10.0 +/- 0.3 … Show more

“…Serum progesterone concentration averaged 328 pg/ml and ranged from <50 to 933 pg/ml during the luteal phase (Plotka et al, 1988). Progesterone values were much higher during the luteal phase in the present study (808-2 ± 44-4 pg/ml) with a smaller range.…”

“…Phase length estimates as well as ovarian cycle length estimates are given as mean ± SD. Females were categorized as having an irregular cycle when overall cycle length exceeded or fell short of the reported norm of 13 to 17 weeks [10,[17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. The non-cycling category was reserved for females who had no identifiable pattern in 5-pregnan-3-ol-20-on concentrations throughout the study period [46].…”

“…In the female African elephant (Loxodonta africana), estrous cycle length is reported to range between 13 to 17 weeks [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. The cycle is divided into a 4 to 6 week follicular phase after 4 which an increase in progesterone levels, believed to trigger ovulation, marks the onset of an 8 to 11 week luteal phase [17,[20][21][22].…”
