Ovarian Dysgerminomas in Two Mountain Chicken Frogs (Leptodactylus Fallax)

Abstract: This report describes the gross, histologic, and immunohistochemical features of ovarian dysgerminomas in two adult female mountain chicken frogs (Leptodactylusfallax) from the same zoological institution. One frog was found dead, and the other frog had been ill for several days with a bloated abdomen and lethargy. On necropsy, large, pale multilobulated masses replaced the left ovary in both frogs, and one frog also had numerous smaller nodules scattered throughout the coelomic viscera. Histologically, these … Show more

“…7,8,11,14,16 Ovarian tumors in domestic species are classified into three categories based on the type of prevailing neoplastic cell: sex cord tumors that include granulosa cell tumors, epithelial cell tumors, including adenomas and adenocarcinomas, and germ cell tumors that include dysgerminomas and teratomas. 7 In human females, germ cell tumors account for 30% of ovarian tumors, but malignant germ cell tumors account for only 1-3% of all ovarian tumors.…”

“…Other spontaneous neoplasias in X. laevis include tumors of the digestive track [77], melanophoromas, and more rarely, renal carcinoma and nephroblastoma [75, 78]. We have recently described a type of ovarian tumor in X. laevis [2]; a similar tumor was also described in another anuran species ( Leptodactylus fallax ; [79]).…”

“…Cells within the tumor nodules resembled seminoma cells of the testis but since the sex of the frog was female, the equivalent tumor in females is ovarian dysgerminoma, one of the three main types of ovarian tumors. Until recently (28), this neoplasm had never been reported in amphibians. Slides of these tumors were submitted to the Registry of Tumors in Lower Animals in May of 2000.…”
