Outsourcing prioritized warranty repairs

Abstract: We consider the problem of outsourcing warranty repairs to outside vendors when items have priorities in service. The manufacturer has a contract with a fixed number of repair vendors. The manufacturer pays a fixed fee for each repair done by a vendor which is independent of the repair type and priority class but depends on the vendor. There are a fixed number of items under warranty, and each item belongs to one of a fixed number of priority classes. The manufacturer also pays for holding costs incurred when … Show more

“…Extend the results to problems with n types of items. The algorithm for finding the optimal stateindependent policy can be easily extended to n types of items (See Buczkowski et al [5]). Unfortunately, generalizing the method used in this article to derive the indices requires future work, and may not be straightforward.…”

“…One can use the special structure of this optimization problem to formulate it as a multi-commodity network flow problem along the same lines as in Buczkowski et al [5], and solve it using the methods given in Ahuja et al [1]. We omit the details.…”

“…See, for example, the related comments in the Aberdeen Group's 2005 study "Best Practice in Strategic Service Management" (cited by Violino 2006). Further, in their study of a model for the outsourcing of warranty repairs, Buckowski et al (2005) cite a desire to increase the geographic reach of (high-quality) service as a rationale for contracting several repair vendors. This was also cited by McDougall (2005, p. 1) as a factor in ABN Amro's move to multiple vendors.…”
