now IJGI Science) marked its tenth anniversary by publishing a special issue (Vol. 10, no. 1) in honour of the founding editor Terry Coppock who did much to lay the foundations of present-day GIS, particularly in relation to rural land-use planning. A special issue of the Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing (PERS) journal on integrating remote sensing and GIS (Vol. 62, no. 11) commemorated the tenth anniversary of the first special issue of PERS dedicated to the same theme. The third special issue (of IJGIS, Vol. 10, no. 6) was on parallel processing in GIS, an important research area that is set to expand over the coming years. Several of the articles contained in these special issues are discussed in later sections. The year 1996 also saw the launch of Transactions in GIS, a new journal published by Geolnformation International dedicated entirely to GIS.The second milestone relates to the book entitled Principles of geographic information systems for land resources assessment by Professor Peter Burrough (Burrough, 1996). This book was published in 1996 in its second edition ten years on from the original. It was the first book on environmental GIS, and it remains an industry standard. In addition, three volumes in a new book series under the 'GISDATA' banner were published in 1996 (Burrough and Frank, 1996;Masser et al., 1996;Muller et al., 1996) as well as at least 20 other new books on GIS. It would serve little purpose to list them all, but the number
