Outpatient rehabilitation of workers with musculoskeletal disorders using structured workplace description

Abstract: Our results support evidence that information exchange for workplace description and rehabilitation therapist may help to reduce sick leave days and achieve very high rtw-ratio. However it is important to observe the effects of this shared information for longer intervals.

“…All interventions were compared to care as usual or a control treatment or to the results of similar studies. In one study, a comparison was made between the number of sickness absence days before and after the intervention in a single group of employees (pre/post test, no control) [15]. This study reduced annual sick leave days for 2 years.…”

“…Multidisciplinary interventions appeared to support RTW in physical complaints [14, 15, 1721]. Two high quality studies showed that interventions that included contact with the employer/workplace improved RTW at 12 months follow up in employees with musculoskeletal complaints [19, 20].…”

“…One study 50 reported a decrease in sick leave that did not reach statistical significance and two studies 49 51 reported a statistically significant reduction of sick leave following the multilevel intervention. One study,15 reported a decrease in the amount of sick leave taken following the intervention.…”

“…These authors 25 investigated this issue more in depth and suggested that this trend could be associated with factors such as the presence of asymmetry in the mental space representation, vestibular disorder associated with sensory-motor asymmetries or asymmetries in the dopaminergic system. Despite not being the main scope of the present paper and the limitations inherent to general screening studies, it is important to mention that the asymmetry found confirms prior studies that the static gait without vision input is a directional tendency and that we need further studies in order to better understand its mechanisms 25 . The associations seen between dynamic balance changes and smoking, drinking, hypertension and negative emotional states, even considering that epidemiological studies on this topic are extremely insipient, seems to have a consistent biological support.…”

“…Additionally, dynamic balance tests, such as the Unterberger, have been associated with advanced technological equipment which allow for a more accurate monitoring and a greater objective interpretation. This is the case in the study 25 which quantified the lateral deviation based on the Unterberger-Fukuda test and determined the possible factors which could be potentially associated to these deviations assessing 25 young adults in experimental conditions. Thus, complementary investigations with this technological support could be led with the aim of confirming the associations between dynamic balance, smoking and negative emotional state.…”
