Outdoor Navigation Systems to Promote Urban Mobility to Aid Visually Impaired People

Abstract: Promoting social inclusion is a field of active research and an emergent topic relates to blind and visually impaired people. Among the difficulties they face, we address two which are related to the use of public transports and performing pedestrian routes between points of reference. Regarding the use of public transports, we address the difficulty blind people feel of knowing where they are along the way preventing them to ring the bell for the driver to stop, in an independent way. Regarding pedestrian wal… Show more

“…On the other hand, the majority of works focused on outdoor navigation are GPS-based systems, others are internet of things (IoT), artificial vision, inertial sensors, and a digital camera integrated into smartphones [5], [17]- [25]. Lima et al in [5] developed a mobile application that allows users to walk from one landmark to another, which provides them assistance in the use of public transport. It is based on GPS.…”

“…This system works with ultrasonic sensors and GPS modules to assist a blind person using public transport and allows them to know their current location. Lima et al in [5] proposed a system for VIBP to know where they are along the way, preventing them to ring the bell for the driver to stop independently, this system of which is based on a mobile application that allows users to walk to reference points. Moreover, Krainz et al in [38] developed a BLE-based system to help VIBP in the identification of the right bus, it consists of BLE modules installed on the buses and a smartphone as a medium for giving messages to the user, this system only contemplates the boarding stage, and it was not tested in a real environment.…”

“…Traditional methods of teaching English in Bangladesh, on the other hand, confined English language learning to mechanical memorization and failed miserably to create language competence among secondary school pupils . By limiting pupils to just passive recipients of words rather than active participants in the learning process, these categorization techniques and teaching materials make learning a tedious endeavour and develop disdain among them (Lima et al,2018). Because students have limited opportunities to communicate in English and have little exposure to academic English, they are often unable to completely follow lectures or actively engage in class discussions.…”

“…English is, in many countries, the language of the mediation and is the most important language in the world in political, economic, military, industrial, cultural and scientific fields in international relations. The major problem for college students at university is that they have so far learned the language, not practical (Lima et al, 2018;Kurmanali et al, 2018). They know English grammar but cannot speak the language.…”
