Background The usefulness of autologous pericardium treated with glutaraldehyde (GA) for tracheal defect closure is unknown. This study preliminarily evaluated whether a GA-treated autologous pericardial graft can effectively close tracheal defects in a beagle model. Methods Defects of 10 mm × 10 mm were created on the trachea of 10 beagles and divided into a GA-treated group (n = 5), with tracheal reconstruction using GA-treated pericardium, and control group (n = 5), using fresh pericardium. Repair sites were evaluated through bronchoscopy and histology. Blood flows on graft were measured using laser Doppler technique on postoperative days (PODs) 0, 4, 7, 14, 28, and 56. Repair sites were histologically evaluated on POD 56. In addition, GA-treated pericardia of three other beagles were histologically evaluated 12 months postoperatively, for long-term follow-up. Results All animals survived; none developed anastomotic insufficiency. The mean suturing time and frequency of additional suture were significantly shorter and lower in the GA-treated group than in the control group (p = 0.002, 0.004). All animals in the control group exhibited graft contraction, whereas the GA-treated group healed with most graft residual and reepithelialization in the bronchoscopic and histological findings (p = 0.01, 0.004). Further, all long-term GA-treated pericardia of three beagles were confirmed as residual grafts with reepithelialization, without contraction, at 12 months postoperatively. Blood flows on graft using laser Doppler technique in the GA-treated group were detected at POD 14 or thereafter. Conclusion GA-treated pericardium was easier to handle and provided favorable scaffolding, without graft contraction, compared with the nontreated pericardium at short- and long-term follow-up.

Background: Over the past decade, percutaneous atrial septal defect (ASD) closure has been the preferred treatment option in many clinical programs for ASD. Percutaneous ASD closures with advanced device architecture and distribution have established user experience and process security. The ability to diagnose has also improved. The devices have evolved from the larger fixtures to the reset zone, being easily eliminated with little residual mesh material and comfortable fitting with the surrounding structures. Biodegradable technology has been introduced and will be considered as a future option. The emergence of the use of the ASD closure device over the last forty years includes improvements that reduce the incidence of adverse effects reported over the years. Issues reported in the literature include thrombus formation, air tightness, device insertion, abrasion, residual shunts and nickel hypersensitivity. Modern tools hold medium and long-term data with excellent results. Multi-sized devices securely close simple and complex ASDs that can re-scan, reset, and detect percutaneous advanced delivery procedures. In this review, the most widely used tools and distribution processes are discussed and the tools that show promise for the future. Conclusion: As the field of transcatheter treatment of atrial septal defects (TC-ASD) and congenital interventional cardiology develops, real-world design studies provide valuable developmental information on aspects of care where there is disagreement about best practices and more research is needed.

Introduction: The autologous pericardium, treated or fresh, is used in reconstructive cardiovascular surgery. We aimed to describe the features of fresh pericardium utilized in right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) reconstruction, years after the initial surgery. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 72 patients (65.3% male, mean age =18.68 ± 9.63 y) with a history of RVOT reconstruction with the fresh autologous pericardium who underwent reoperation. During the surgery, a 1 × 1 cm sample was cut from the previous pericardial patch, and hematoxylin and eosin (H & E), Masson’s trichrome, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining was conducted. All the stained slides were evaluated,and the descriptive results were explained. Results: The mean follow-up duration was 13.48 ± 7.38 years. In preoperative evaluations,53 (73.6%) patients exhibited no RVOT dilatation, 17 (23.6%) showed mild RVOT dilatation,and 2 (2.8%) had RVOT aneurysms. The H & E staining revealed no calcification in 80.55%(58/72), mild calcification in 9.72% (7/72), and moderate calcification in 9.72% (7/72) of the total samples. None of the specimens demonstrated a marked calcification. All the samples were positive for CD31, CD34, smooth muscle alpha-actin, and von Willebrand factor in IHC. In Masson’s trichrome staining, on average, 64.74% (±18.61) of the tissue sections contained collagen fibers. Conclusion: The fresh autologous pericardium, utilized for RVOT reconstruction, showed viability, growth potential, positivity for endothelial cell markers, vascular differentiation,insignificant calcification, and no stenosis at long-term follow-up. We would, therefore, suggest it as a suitable choice for such reconstructive operations. Moreover, its usage during total correction of tetralogy of Fallot could be safe, feasible, and durable.
