Outcomes of surgical resection for pulmonary metastasis from ovarian cancer

Abstract: Background Due to its rarity, information on pulmonary metastasectomy for pulmonary metastasis from ovarian cancer is limited. Methods Cases of pulmonary metastasectomy for ovarian cancer were collected in a multi-institutional setting and the outcomes were analyzed. Results Among 1508 cases in which pulmonary resection was performed to treat pulmonary metastasis from tumors of various organs, 6 cases (0.4%) involved pulmonary metastasis from… Show more

“…Metastasis ovarian cancer is an advanced stage malignancy in which ovarian cancer cells spread from the primary tumor to distant areas such as the peritoneal cavity, omentum [37,38], liver [39], intestines, spleen [40], lungs [41,42], brain [43,44], and lymph nodes outside the abdomen [45]. Cancer cells must migrate and invade through the extracellular matrix into the blood vessels and lymphatic system, and then extravasate from the vessel to form distant sites [46].…”

“…Eighty-five percent of patients with OC recurrence present with intra-abdominal disease, resulting in death due to ascites or bowel obstruction [ 6 ]. Because PMs from OC are usually accompanied by extra-thoracic metastases and solitary PMs are rare, there have been only a few studies on radical surgery for PM from OC [ 7 ]. According to the 2016 Japanese statistics, only 69 (0.8%) of 8497 patients underwent PMT for OC [ 8 ].…”

“…Informações sobre metástases pulmonares oriundas de câncer de ovário são limitadas devido à sua raridade. 13 A única paciente do estudo com carcinoma ovariano apresentava metástase pleural e, desde sua abordagem diagnóstica, permaneceu viva até o término do tempo de avaliação do trabalho (cerca de 10 meses).…”
