Outcomes of surgical management for popliteal artery aneurysms: An analysis of 583 cases

Abstract: Surgical intervention for PAA is associated with low operative mortality and offers excellent two-year limb salvage, even in high-risk patients. Patients' preoperative functional status and perioperative blood transfusion requirements were the most predictive indicators of negative outcomes.

“…3 It was not meaningful to compare OR and endovascular repair (ER) during this time period. Johnson et al 4 studied the outcome of open surgical treatment for popliteal aneurysm in 583 cases in 1994e2005. Low operative mortality and good limb salvage rates were reported.…”

“…In the case of OPAR, the concern is the overall 11% perioperative morbidity rate associated with open repair. 3 Surgical site infection is reported in 2.1% of patients. 3 Because the VQI database is limited to in-hospital data and data collected at the 1-year follow-up, our data cannot ascertain perioperative complications beyond the index hospitalization after either procedure.…”

“…However, to improve outcomes, the impact of the patient's background and selected procedural method on re-intervention and adverse events should be analyzed in detail. Although a previous study indicated that race (African-American) is a risk factor associated with mortality and morbidity [10], additional studies analyzing race are lacking, and there are few reports on PAAs in Asia. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the outcomes of open surgery, using our own methodology, in patients of the same race with PAAs, in a single institution.…”
