Outcomes of Patients Who Undergo Cardiac Surgical Procedures After Liver Transplantation

Abstract: Cardiac surgical procedures can be performed with acceptable short-term and long-term outcomes in liver transplant recipients. Elevated preoperative and postoperative MELD scores and postoperative peak creatinine level may portend death in this cohort. There is a constant hazard of death of 10% per year.

“…We had a low (4%) 30-day mortality rate in our study population. This rate is comparable to rates shown by others [12,14,24], who reported a mortality rate ranging from 0% to 7%. Several smaller series have reported mortality rates as low as zero after cardiac operations in hepatic transplant recipients [2,12,25].…”

“…Recent study showed that the optimal cutoff point of MELD for predicting postoperative mortality is 13.8 in patients undergoing cardiac surgery after liver transplantation. 14 Considering that AAAD surgery is most technically challenging operation in Cardiovascular surgery, we recorded the highest MELD-XI score a week after the surgery and divided patients into high-MELD-XI (MELD-XI ≥14) and low-MELD-XI (MELD-XI <14) groups.…”
