Outcomes of manual small incision cataract surgery (mSICS) compared with phacoemulsification from population based outreach eye camp, in Yogyakarta and Southern Central Java Region, Indonesia

Abstract: In this study, we compared the effectiveness (comparison of post-operative visual acuity/VA) of phacoemulsification by ophthalmologists versus manual small incision cataract surgery (mSICS) by residents in a mass cataract surgery setting. This research was a cross-sectional study of 1137 cataract patients who underwent cataract surgery by ophthalmologists and residents in outreach eye camps during 2015-2017 (3 years). There were 554 patients who underwent phacoemulsification by ophthalmologists and 583 patient… Show more

“…23 Likewise, Mahayana et al also observed similar results, reporting a mean astigmatism of 0.98 D in the Phaco group while 1.45 D in SICS group. 24 In line with our study, Iqbal et al reported slightly higher astigmatism in SICS group as compared to Phaco group. 25 Limitation of our study was that only Phaco and SICS were compared.…”

“…8 A study in Yogyakarta and Southern Central Java Region Indonesia comparing the outcome of manual small incision cataract and phacoemulsification found improvement in visual acuity of ≥ 6/18 in 59.6% eyes after phacoemulsification and 53.5% eyes after manual small incision cataract surgery (mSICS). 9 There was no statistical difference in visual outcome results between the two groups (p = 0.10). A more recent study found 71.1% of samples in Sanjiwani Hospital Gianyar Bali obtained good visual outcome six weeks after phacoemulsification.…”

“…With regard to surgery, the effectiveness of phacoemulsification in increasing visual acuity was found to be similar between men and women (Mahayana et al, 2018). Cataract surgery is the most common intraocular surgery performed worldwide and has advanced technically in recent years.…”
