Outcomes of liver resection in hepatocellular adenoma and focal nodular hyperplasia

Abstract: If patients with HCA and FNH require surgery, limited resection can be carried out with low morbidity and without mortality. Patients with preoperative symptoms show a high rate of postoperative symptom relief.

“…Considering relief of complaints, similar results were observed by Kneuertz et al and previously in the same cohort of patients, by Bieze et al 1,23 However, in these studies, patients' complaints were evaluated with a follow-up of only a maximum of 12 months, in 179 patients and 48 patients, respectively. This cohort study is the first to assess post-operative quality of life over an extended period of time.…”

“…This cohort study is the first to assess post-operative quality of life over an extended period of time. 1,23,26 Patients after resection of left-sided liver tumours had remarkably higher PRI and NWC scores after a median of 54 months than patients with right-sided tumours. Another study from our department has previously shown that patients with left-sided liver tumours had higher pain scores to begin with, and apparently this difference persists after long term follow-up.…”

“…It is often difficult to differentiate HCC from hepatocellular adenoma or focal nodular hyperplasia72, 73 and needle biopsy has this suggests that there is a risk of implantation in cases of malignant tumor 74. In addition, previous studies reported substantial symptom improvement after liver resection for symptomatic patients75 and that LLR was useful for diagnosis and treatment 76. Occasionally, surgical treatment is indicated for hepatocellular adenoma and hepatic hemangioma because these lesions sometimes progress to form bulky tumors and present a risk of rupture.…”
