Outcomes of infants born at periviable gestations in Japan

Abstract: In describing outcomes of neonates born at 22-23 weeks' gestation, Dr. Malamitsi-Puchner wrote that 'Even Japan, which has pioneered the active management of infants born at 22 weeks, has not reported improvements in death rates or cognitive and neurodevelopmental outcomes in the last 10 years'. 1 This is inaccurate, and we wish to correct the record.Multiple studies demonstrate that mortality in infants born at the earliest gestational ages has decreased in Japan.
