Outcomes of Bone Anchored Hearing Aid Implant at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC)

Abstract: The cross sectional study was conducted in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center (UKMMC), Malaysia from August 2012 to December 2013. All patients implanted with in UKMMC from December 2001 until December 2012 was included. Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI) questionnaires and UKMMC questionnaires were used as part of the assessment tool. The GBI is a scoring which measures the change in health status produced by surgical interventions. UKMMC questionnaires was invented by our department to assess questio… Show more

“…Regarding the functional outcomes, we verified, as expected, that with the BAHA, there was an overall significant improvement in sound-field PTA, SRT, and WRS and that the overall mean improvement of hearing threshold was 29 dB HL, which is slightly better than other published studies ( Bruschini et al., 2020 ; Rahim et al., 2018 ). Additionally, the degree of improvement was not statistically influenced by the type of hearing loss or indication for implant placement.…”

“…Additionally, as the scale assesses eight basic health concepts, the change/worsening of the patient's general health status may not be entirely due to the placement of the BAHA but due to other life events that may have occurred over the follow-up period that were not controlled in this study. Nevertheless, there are other studies that have evaluated the improvement of patients' HRQoL with BAHA, primarily with the Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI), which showed that the BAHA improved the patients' quality of life by improving their wellbeing and social and health status ( Hagr, 2007 ; Rahim et al., 2018 ).…”

“…However, PRO is an accepted method to test the outcome regarding to the quality of life with a certain therapy [ 31 34 ]. In the case of the bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) a number of other investigations proved an enhancement of QoL [ 35 37 ]. Badran et al showed in their BAHA-study already in 2006 the importance of patient’s self-rated QoL to justify a procedure and to reach a better predictive value at the time of preoperative counseling [ 38 ].…”

“…In a study conducted in 2018, it was reported that an average of 5-25 dB functional gain was obtained with BAHA. 13 In this study, the functional gain was obtained on average 5-17 dB, while the best results were obtained at 4000 Hz.…”
