Outcomes of Argatroban Treatment in Patients With Atherothrombotic Stroke

Abstract: Background and Purpose-Argatroban, a selective thrombin inhibitor, is recommended for the use in patients with atherothrombotic stroke by the Japanese Guidelines for the Management of Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke. “…The Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC) database has been widely used in clinical epidemiology studies. 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 The DPC data are unique in that distinctions are made between main diagnosis, comorbidities, and complications, and unlimited numbers of procedures and medications can be recorded. 22 In addition, the National Hospital Organization (NHO) introduced the Standardized Structured Medical Record Information Exchange (SS-MIX) standardized storage 23 to its hospitals, enabling daily laboratory data to be recorded.…”

A retrospective observational study revealed that argatroban was safe but provided no added benefit in early outcome after acute atherothrombotic stroke [ 32 ]. There are several differences between that and the present study.…”

“…In brief, more than 1000 hospitals, including all 81 academic hospitals in Japan, contribute to the DPC database. The annual number of cases added to the database is nearly 7 000 000 and encompasses nearly 50% of all hospital admissions in Japan [29].…”
