“…The overall in‐hospital survival was 50%, which was similar to the survival of patients undergoing first time ECMO support at that institution. Seventy‐five percent (3/4) of the patients who had a repeat ECMO inserted during the same hospitalization died; whereas the mortality for a repeat ECMO on a followup hospitalization was 0% (0/2) …”

“…In this edition of the Journal, Brady and coworkers review the outcomes of REPs and compare them to the overall ECMO population in the Nebraska ECMO Research Database . A REP was defined as a patient who required a second period of ECMO support, either during the same hospitalization or on a separate hospital admission.…”

“…In this edition of the Journal, Brady and coworkers review the outcomes of REPs and compare them to the overall ECMO population in the Nebraska ECMO Research Database. 5 What factors should constitute an indication for a second ECMO run? The limited data from this series would suggest that patients receiving a second ECMO on a subsequent hospitalization and those who are candidates for a ventricular assist device or cardiac transplantation have a greater chance for survival.…”
