Outcomes and risk factors for failure after trabeculectomy in Taiwanese patients: medical chart reviews from 2006 to 2017

Abstract: AimsTo determine long-term outcomes and risk factors for failure after mitomycin C (MMC)-augmented initial trabeculectomy (IT) in Taiwanese patients.MethodsWe reviewed medical records of patients with glaucoma undergoing IT during December 2006–December 2016. We defined complete success as an intraocular pressure (IOP) of >5 or ≤21 mm Hg or IOP reduction of ≥20% from baseline without supplemental medications and qualified success as the aforementioned IOP levels with or without supplemental medications. “…Based on the criteria of 5 < IOP ≤ 21 mmHg and 20% reduction of preoperative IOP, the complete and quali ed success rates are 47.2% and 77.7% at 3-year follow up. This data is consistent with previous studies in Chinese population [9,10]. There are no signi cant differences in surgical outcomes between PACG and POAG.…”

“…The 5-year success rate was 87.3% according to the Japanese Collaborative Bleb-Related Infection Incidence and Treatment Study (CBIITS) [8]. A research in Taiwan described a cumulative quali ed success rate of 67.1% in a 10year follow-up period [9]. A retrospective study on mitomycin C (MMC)-augmented trabeculectomy revealed that the quali ed success rate was 75% after a follow-up period of 21.8 months in Hong Kong [10].…”

“…We found gelatin stent induced pressure reduction over 2 years was generally not influenced by some risk factors recognised to adversely influence trabeculectomy outcomes 3,14,15 . Our results demonstrated no statistically significant effect of ethnicity on gelatin stent survival.…”

“…Landers et al (2012) found that the severity of VF damage, along with higher baseline IOP, previous ocular surgeries and the number of topical medications were risk factors significantly associated with poor surgical outcomes. Chiu et al (2020) recently found that patients with visual acuity less than 6/60 and with a therapy regimen requiring a higher number of glaucoma medications had a higher risk of filtration failure.…”
