This article presents a method of conducting a scoping review that synthesizes recommendations from previous literature while contributing additional customizations to enhance a team-based, mixed method approach. A form of knowledge synthesis, scoping reviews aim to describe the breadth of an existent knowledge base and inform future research, practice, and policy. Scoping review methodology has continued to evolve since the inception of the Arksey and O’Malley Framework in 2005. After examining recommendations from the body of literature on scoping review methodology and scoping reviews about scoping reviews, we found that teamwork and mixed method approaches were rarely addressed. Following the Arksey and O’Malley Framework, we discuss current recommendations within the literature, rationale for our customizations to enhance the method, and present an application of these customizations as illustrated in our companion article, “Outcomes and outputs affiliated with children’s advocacy centers in the United States: A scoping review.”In sum, our enhancements to the Arksey and O’Malley Framework: Explicitly integrate qualitative and quantitative assessment of the literature following best practices in mixed methods research, and, Integrate a team-based approach throughout all stages of the scoping review process.

Child sexual abuse is a major public health problem. About one in every four girls and one in every 13 boys in the United States experience sexual abuse. In order to best serve these patients and families, the forensic nurse examiner team from a large urban Level 1 trauma center partnered with the local child advocacy center to provide ready access to educated, competent pediatric examiners who provide developmentally appropriate medical forensic care in a child-friendly environment. Consistent with national best practice standards, this occurs as part of a coordinated, colocated, highly functional multidisciplinary team. These services are provided free of charge and regardless of timeline from abuse. This partnership removes several key barriers to this care, including difficulty coordinating with multiple organizations, cost, lack of knowledge regarding available resources, and decreased ability to provide medical forensic care to nonacute patients.

In 1979, Sweden introduced an amendment in The Parental Code Act which prohibits parents from using physical punishment against a child. All Swedish professionals who have reason to suspect child abuse and neglect are legally obligated to report to child protective services (CPS). The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) entered into force in Sweden in 1990 and became statutory in January 2020. Article 24 of the UNCRC states that children have the right to the best possible health, access to health care and rehabilitation. Promotion of good health is enshrined in the Swedish Health Care Act and Dental Care Act, respectively. 1,2
