“…Poorly dilating pupil is one of the major preoperative hurdles in pediatric cataract surgery. [14][15][16][17] Maintaining adequate and consistent mydriasis during the entire surgery can be a challenge, thus adversely affecting the entire surgical procedure. Repeated touching of the iris in a small pupil can increase surgical time and leads to fibrinous complications, which in turn can lead to visual axis obscuration.…”

“…Conventionally in children, the pupil is dilated with a standard regime of topical drops (diluted for infants), given preoperatively starting a few hours before surgery. 13,14 There are potential disadvantages of topical mydriatics. First, they need to be instilled repeatedly prior to surgery to ensure adequate intraoperative mydriasis, which is time-consuming.…”

“…1,2,4,6,9,11,12 Primary IOL implantation when combined with primary posterior capsulorhexis and limited anterior vitrectomy is now showing promising results in children below 2 years of age also. 2,[13][14][15] Unilateral cataract faces its own challenges even after a meticulous surgery due to the coexistence of dense amblyopia which adversely affects the visual outcome. We conducted this study to analyse the surgical as well as visual outcomes after phacoaspiration with IOL implantation in cases of unilateral cataract.…”

“…The overall incidence of secondary procedures and glaucoma was low in our study compared with that in the West, peculiar to most studies from our region. 2,4,15 A meticulous surgery by an experienced surgeon with posterior capsulotomy, limited anterior vitrectomy with PCIOL implantation are the major protective factors against visual axis obscuration. None of the children operated were less than 1 month of age and pseudophakia rather than aphakia could be a protective factor for glaucoma.…”
