“…Other retrospective case series have reported a higher mortality rate compared to our results among patients admitted to the ICU with acute exacerbation of IPF. 1,[17][18][19][20] Our data support the results recently reported by Churg et al 21 In their report, 10 of 12 patients (9 with usual interstitial pneumonia, 2 with nonspecific interstitial pneumonia, and 1 with chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis)survived the acute exacerbation and were discharged with survival times of 1 to 11 months. Pulmonary function tests in our cohort revealed relatively mild to moderate impairment prior to presentation.…”

“…9 With a poor prognosis and higher risk of infection associated with invasive ventilation, noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has a potentially beneficial role. [11][12][13][14] Recently, Molina-Molina and co-workers reported no significant benefit of mechanical ventilation on the prognosis of IPF patients with ARF. 15 In addition, factors affecting ICU mortality in this group of patients, and the question of how long the support should be given, remain unclear.…”
