Outcome of "Kissing Stents" for Aortoiliac Atherosclerotic Disease, Including the Effect on the Non-diseased Contralateral Iliac Limb

Abstract: Kissing stents offer an invaluable alternative to surgery. There were no long-term occlusions following kissing stents in a previously non-symptomatic/non-diseased limb.

“…Our assisted primary patency rates are 90% and 86% at 1 and 2 years, respectively, and are comparable to those of Mohamed et al, 9 who reported an assisted primary patency of 84% at 1 and 2 years. Our secondary patency rates vary between 94% and 81% over 5 years.…”

“…Complications oc- curred in 0% to 16%, including hematoma, pseudoaneurysm, arteriovenous fistula, distal embolism, and aortoiliac dissection. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] In our series, the technical success (100%), complication rate (12%), and the type of complications were comparable to these studies. However, in our study, the follow-up period was longer, and all 3 patency rates are presented up to 5 years.…”

“…Previous studies demonstrated high technical success and favorable 4,[7][8][9][10][11] whereas other studies reported relatively poorer outcomes, with patency rates of 45% to 65%. [12][13][14][15] The inconsistency in immediate and later outcomes among previous studies may reflect heterogeneity in study populations, lesion characteristics, and procedural techniques.…”

“…In a single study, Mohamed et al 13 reported that there was no obstruction in 12 nondiseased contralateral CIAs after the kissing-stents procedure during a 3-year follow-up. Thus, there is limited information regarding outcomes with kissing stents or any other endovascular technique in unilateral aortoiliac bifurcation lesions.…”

“…Studies have shown technical success rates of 95 to 100% for angioplasty of the infra-renal aorta and angioplasty of the aortic bifurcation. [7][8][9][11][12][13][14][15] Stenting the aorta yields similar success rates of 87 to 100%, with a primary patency of 80 to 100% at 3 to 10 years. 10,[16][17][18][19][20][21] Whether stenting increases patency rates over balloon angioplasty alone remains unclear.…”
