Outcome of Gastric Surgery for Morbid Obesity: Weight Changes and Personality Traits

Abstract: This controlled study explores weight change in relation to certain personality and behavioural characteristics in a population of morbidly obese individuals who have undergone a gastric procedure to lose weight. In particular, measures of alexithymia and symbolic function were used, and the results of the study indicate that these concepts are particularly helpful in understanding obese individuals, and aetiology and treatment of their condition.

“…For example, personality traits emerged as use-ful predictors of treatment outcome in patients with gastrointestinal disorders [5] , obesity [6] , hyperopia [7] and even individual responses to certain surgical treatments seem to be associated with personality [8,9] . In psychiatry, personality traits have been successfully linked to treatment outcome in depression [10] , anorexia nervosa [11,12] , schizophrenia [13] and withdrawal severity in benzodiazepine dependence [14] .…”

“…[10][11][12][13] However, some authors have investigated the effect of obesity surgery on personality. In two different studies, using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and Eysenck Personality Inventory, Bull et al 14,15 note that although the operated patients were less depressed, surgery was not accompanied with any significant changes in personality. However, since comparisons were made between different groups of people preoperatively and at different follow-up intervals, the lack of changes might simply be an artefact of possible initial differences.…”

“…He described the mental processes in terms of psychosomatic personality characteristics along with the concepts of pensée opératoire described by Marty and De M 'Uzan [3] and of alexithymia introduced by Sifncos [4], In some studies a direct connection between obesity and alexithymie traits was found in adult subjects [5][6][7], Two recent studies [8,9] supported this point of view on the basis of Rorschach test protocols and facial emo tion decoding ability tests carried out in obese children.…”
