Outcome of 200 pediatric living donor liver transplantations in India

Abstract: Advances in medical and surgical techniques associated with multidisciplinary teams including skilled pediatric liver transplant surgeons, anesthetists, dedicated pediatric hepatologists, pediatric intensivists, interventional radiologists and pathologists resulted in an excellent outcome of living related liver transplants in children. Low age and weight of the baby does not seem to be a contraindication for liver transplantation as outcome were comparable in our experience.

“…When death and LT are taken as separate outcomes, King's College criteria and Liver Injury Unit score are not good predictors of outcome in children with ALF. [266][267][268] Presence of $3 King's College criteria for nonacetaminophen liver failure have been used as criteria to list for LT. 269 PELD score for children aged <12 years and MELD score for children aged >12 years are also used to assess disease severity. Serial rise in PELD/MELD scores or in prothrombin time 246 have been used as listing criteria for LT.…”

“…AGS is a multisystem disorder with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern caused by mutations either in JAG1 or NOTCH2 genes . The prevalence of AGS is 1 in 70 000 live births but published literature from India is restricted to isolated case reports/series and data on LT in AGS in children are limited . 20%‐30% of children with AGS will require LT over their lifetime .…”
