Outcome Measurement in Children With a History of Disorders of Consciousness After Severe Brain Injury: Telephone Administration of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition, and Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended Pediatric Revision

Abstract: Examine initial feasibility and utility of a battery of measures administered via telephone interview with a caregiver for describing long-term outcomes in individuals with a history of disorders of consciousness (DoC) after pediatric acquired brain injury (ABI).

“…In another study, feasibility and utility of measures of long-term outcomes collected via telephone interview was examined in a convenience sample of 41 caregivers of children from two different hospitals who were admitted to inpatient rehabilitation in a state of DoC following either traumatic or acquired brain injury, using the Vineland-3, a detailed measure of neurobehavioral functioning, and the Glasgow Outcome Scale -Extended for Pediatrics (GOS-E Peds), a much shorter measure of global neurological functioning [85,86]. All those who consented completed the interview.…”

“…Research employing a single measure of global functioning following pABI is scarce (116) even though there is a developmentally appropriate version of GOS-E, the pediatric version of GOS-E (GOS-E Peds) (117). Despite strong associations to functional independence (measured by Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale) lending support to its concurrent validity for assessing longterm outcomes (118,119), GOS-E Peds is rarely used. Prospective pABI studies have demonstrated significant improvement in disability during the first year post-injury, followed by minor subsequent improvement (120,121).…”
