Outcome analysis of sildenafil citrate for erectile dysfunction of Japanese patients

Abstract: The approved maximal dose of sildenafil is only 50 mg in Japan, but the impact of dose regulation on treatment outcomes has not been established. Moreover, the contributors to the efficacy in patients having an intact peripheral nervous system have not been fully elucidated. We assessed in Japanese patients the treatment outcomes of sildenafil for erectile dysfunction (ED) under regulation of the approved dose and identified factors contributing to its efficacy among those with various etiologies other than pe… Show more

“…As far as we know, there has been no previous report on the association between responsiveness to PDE5 inhibitor and MS. Our results show a lower response rate for sildenafil in patients with MS, which was 40%, while previous Japanese reports showed that it was about 70% in general patients [24,25]. Moreover, we revealed that the response rate significantly decreased as the number of MS components increased.…”

“…Suetomi et al analyzed the impact of MS on the responsiveness to 50-mg sildenafil in Japanese patients with ED. They reported a lower response rate for patients with MS, compared with the overall efficacy in Japanese ED patients (40% vs. 70.9%, respectively) [18,19]. The IIEF-erectile function score and the response rate for sildenafil decreased as the number of MS components increased.…”

“…The drug has been well accepted internationally, and its efficacy is as high as 70–80% . PDE5i is reported to be highly effective for achieving sufficient erection for sexual intercourse in vasculogenic ED patients, which is the most prevalent type of ED among middle‐aged men, although more than 10% of patients are refractory to the treatment . Diabetic ED is less responsive to PDE5i, and it depends on the severity.…”
