Outcome after fixation of metastatic proximal femoral fractures: A systematic review of 40 studies

Abstract: Endoprosthetic reconstruction, intramedullary nailing, and open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) are the most commonly practiced surgical strategies for treatment of metastatic proximal femoral fractures. This review describes functional outcome, local, and systemic complications. All three surgical strategies result in reasonable function on average; however, wide ranges indicate that both poor and good functional levels are obtained. We found that the overall reoperation rate was comparable for endoprosthe… Show more

“…Reconstruction with a (modular or custom) proximal femoral endoprosthesis (tumor prosthesis) or an allograft‐prosthesis composite are the two main alternatives . Other surgical options, such as intramedullary nailing without tumor resection, can be used for palliative treatment in bone metastases . However, in this study, we aimed to look at reconstructive options after tumor resection with a curative intent or resection aiming for local control of the disease.…”

“…Мы объясняем это тем, что в структуре первичных злокачественных опухолей кости в нашем исследовании превалирующей была хондросаркома кос ти G2 (87,5%), а в группе с метастатическим поражением кости -рак молочной железы (63%) и рак почки (19,5%). Вышеуказанные нозологии наиболее благоприятны для пациентов с точки зрения прогноза выживаемости [3,4,7,22].…”

“…Hence, the assessment of physical function, pain intensity, and quality of life have become important in gauging the effectiveness of any given treatment. However, data on patient‐reported outcome measures, such as physical function and pain intensity, in patients with bone metastatic diseases are scarce . Normative data on patients with symptomatic bone metastasis could help us interpret the results of similar patient groups in the future.…”
