“…An outbreak of Shigella dysenteriae associated with consumption of coconut milk dessert has been reported in Thailand (Hoge, Bodhidatta, Tungtaem, & Echeverria, 1995), and more recently, Denmark and Australia have reported outbreaks of S. Sonnei associated with baby corn imported from Thailand (Lewis et al, 2007). Although culture-confirmed Shigella incidence isolated from patients with diarrhea in Thailand is 0.6/1000 population per year (von Seidlein et al, 2006), we did not isolate any Shigella in this study.…”

“…This relationship between food and pathogen was recognized by Table 1. Selected recent multinational foodborne outbreaks due to contaminated produce items [3,6,7,[9][10][11] Year Pathogen outbreak investigators even before the complex cycle of vertical transmission in the egg-laying hens and internal contamination of eggs was understood [22]. Even more dramatically, the first recognized outbreak of E. coli O157 infections heralded both the newly recognized foodborne pathogen and what turned out to be its predominant food vehicle, ground beef [23].…”

“…Outbreaks of shigellosis have been associated with crowded conditions and poor personal hygiene, such as in prisons, daycare centers, schools and psychiatric institutions [5][6][7][8][9]. Large-scale outbreaks of foodborne shigellosis have been caused by infected food handlers practicing poor standards of personal hygiene [10][11][12][13]. Information on predominant sources and transmission routes of infections is crucial for targeted prevention of foodborne illnesses, and outbreaks frequently offer the only arena for gaining knowledge.…”
