Out-of-Step Protection Based on Equal Area Criterion

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel self-tuning and response-based method for estimation of a single generator instability after large disturbances in multi-machine power systems. The proposed method takes advantage of the Equal-Area Criterion (EAC) and least-squares method. The instability is determined by monitoring the cumulative acceleration and deceleration areas in the power-angle plane. These areas are continuously computed in order to determine whether or not the rotor angle reaches the Unstable Equilibrium Po… Show more

“…In the actual operation process of power grid, a large-scale interconnected power grid will appear in the phenomenon of coherency and cluster instability after a specific disturbance, where coherency refers to the group of generator sets with the same or similar movement change trend of generator rotor after the disturbance, and cluster instability denotes loss of synchronism between this group of Sustainability 2020, 12, 1769 3 of 20 units and other clusters [21]. The slow coherence theory has two-time scale properties, which can be divided into slow mode and fast mode.…”

“…For instance, LOE can be detected, using impedance (Z) [14,15], active power [16], or a combined index of other parameters such as load angle (δ), stator voltage or current, air-gap flux and reactive power [17][18][19][20][21]. Furthermore, OOS is another significant protection which can be detected by P and δ based on equal area criteria [22][23][24][25][26]. Therefore, the successful experience of using generator parameters in detection of LOE and OOS becomes the best motivation for the authors to find out a novel parameter-based method for generators RP protection to improve the speed and security of the previous unsuitable methods.…”

“…In the future back up protection solutions for transmission networks not entirely covered with PMU devices (e.g., segments of 220 kV transmission networks) that would have to rely on state estimation are expected to be researched. Recent research work [20,21] highlights the importance of WAMPAC systems in transmission networks. A list of basic features of different technical solutions for advanced protection systems is presented in Table 2.…”
