Aim: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the preferred method for long-term enteral feeding of patients who cannot be fed orally for various reasons and have a functioning gastrointestinal system. In this study, we aimed to present and discuss the demographic characteristics, indications, and early and late complications of patients implanted with the endoscopic PEG in our center. Material and Method: In this study, we retrospectively evaluated age, gender, chronic diseases, indication for PEG, complications during the procedure, complications arising from PEG during patient follow-up, and survival times of 84 patients who underwent PEG between January 2016 and January 2020 from the electronic medical file system. Results: Of the 84 patients enrolled in the study, 59.5% (n=50) were male and 40.5% (n=34) were female. The mean age of the patients was 61.35±19.52 years. The endoscopic PEG success rate was 97.6%. Of the requests for PEG, 58.6% (n=50) were for patients in intensive care units. The most common indications for PEG insertion were cerebrovascular accident (CVA), chronic nervous system disease, and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Complications related to PEG were observed in 11 patients. All complications were mild, and no severe complications were observed. While one of the complications developed in the early period ( 30 days). No deaths from causes related to the PEG procedure have been observed. Conclusion: In patients with inadequate oral intake, PEG is a safe and appropriate option for continuous enteral feeding because of its low complication and mortality rates.

Background: Cancer that progressively increasing prevalence of, causes malnutrition due to metabolic disorders and treatment side effects. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), gastrojejunostomy and jejunal feeding tube are common applied nutritional support methods. In this our study, we aimed to identify that diagnoses, stages, operation-related laboratory parameters of patients, and to emphasise significance of planning appropriate nutritional support in this patient group as soon as possible.Material and Method: Descriptive analyses were used for the sociodemographic data of 65 cases who underwent surgical nutritional support in Gaziosmanpaşa University Research and Application Hospital between 01. 03.2008 and 01.08.2019. Differences between groups were analysed using the independent sample T Test, and the data of continuous variables were given as mean ± standard deviation. p <0.05 accepted statistically meaningful.Findings: Stomach and head-neck cancers were the most frequent diagnoses, respectively, among patients who supported via surgical feeding methods. While surgical procedures were performed in stage 3-4 in the gastric cancer patient group, procedures were applied in stage 1-2 in the patient group with head and neck cancer. The relationship between low albumin levels (3,3±0,65) and late mortality was statistically meaningful. (p<0,001) Conclusions: Nutritional support methods are frequently performed in the growing cancer patient population. Considering the predictable risk factors in nutritional deficiency and treating in the early period contribute positively to survival.

Cerrahi ve radyolojik olarak PEG tüpü takılabilmesine karşın, daha az invaziv ve daha kolay uygulanabilmesi açısıdan endoskopik olarak PEG yerleştirilmesi tercih edilmektedir. Bu bağlamda gastroenteroloji klinikleri ön plana çıkmaktadır. Biz bu çalışmada, PEG uygulaması yaptığımız hastalardaki endikasyonları, işlem sonrası gelişen komplikasyonları ve takipleri ile ilgili verileri değerlendirmeyi amaçladık. GEREÇ ve YÖNTEMÇalışmaya Mart 1999 -Mart 2014 tarihleri arasında kliniğimiz tarafından PEG takılan hastalar dahil edildi. Hastalar PEG endikasyonları, cinsiyetleri, işlem sonrası gelişen komplikasyonlar, işlem sonrası takip süreleri, aspirasyon ve beslenme intoleransı açısından retrospektif olarak değerlendirildi. Çalışma için GATA etik kurulundan onay alındı. GİRİŞPerkütan endoskopik gastrostomi (PEG), farklı sebeplerle oral yoldan beslenemeyen ancak gastrointestinal sistem fonksiyonları normal olan hastalarda enteral beslenmenin sağlanabilmesi için uygulanabilecek bir yöntemdir. İlk olarak 1980 yılında Gauderer ve Ponsky tarafından Amerika Birleşik Devletlerinde uygulanmıştır (1). Enteral beslenmeyi devam ettirmek açısından en önemli ve kullanışlı uygulama PEG'dir. Fakat PEG dışında çeşitli yollar da bulunmaktadır. Bunlardan bazıları nazogastrik beslenme tüpü, nazojejunal beslenme tüpü, servikal özofagostomi, açık ya da laparoskopik gastrostomi ve perkütan floroskopik gastrostomidir. Tüm yöntemlerin birbirlerine üstün ve zayıf yönleri bulunmaktadır (2). Bir ay ve daha kısa süreli oral beslenemeyecek hastalarda nazogastrik veya nazojejunal beslenme tüpleri tercih edilirken, daha uzun süre oral alımı planlanmayan hastalara ise PEG önerilmektedir (3). The aim of this study was to perform a retrospective analysis characterizing patients with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the indications, complications, procedure details, and follow up of patients who underwent percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in Gulhane Military Medical Academy, Department of Gastroenterology between 1999 and 2014. Results: Of the 642 patients enrolled, 405 were male (63.1%), and 237 female (36.9%). Mean age was 64.2 (range, 18-97) years. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy was successfully performed in all but 7 patients. The most common indication for percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement was neurologic disorders in 495 (77.1%) patients. Other indications were oropharyngeal diseases in 109 (16.9%) patients, and eosophageal diseases in 38 (6%) patients. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy related complications were seen in 123 patients (19.1%).
