Dit themanummer van TGG, dat ook een vervolg krijgt met twee artikelen in het juninummer van TGG dit jaar, gaat over de persoonlijkheid van ouderen, van de 'normale' persoonlijkheid tot persoonlijkheidsstoornissen. De toenemende wetenschappelijke belangstelling voor dit thema is niet vreemd in een maatschappij waarin steeds meer nadruk op individualisering en uniciteit van mensen -en dus ook ouderen -komt te liggen. Deze tendens -de nadruk op individualisering en uniciteit -is ook zichtbaar in de psychologische hulpverlening aan ouderen. 1 Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de toenemende aandacht voor de eigen verhalen van ouderen in psychologische interventies, zoals bij life review en narratieve therapie. De toegenomen belangstelling voor persoonlijkheid en persoonlijkheidsstoornissen bij ouderen past ook bij deze tendens. Het betreft een interessant, nog jong onderzoeksveld. Dit nummer van TGG geeft een goed beeld van de stand van dit nog jonge onderzoeksveld.Wat bedoelen we eigenlijk wanneer we het over persoonlijkheid, temperament of karakter hebben? Wanneer het over een zuidelijk temperament of Drentse nuchterheid gaat, dan gaat het over emoties en de mate van felheid waarmee op prikkels wordt gereageerd of juist de afwezigheid daarvan. Temperament is het meer erfelijke deel van de persoonlijkheid, dat slechts in geringe mate beïnvloedbaar is door leerprocessen en daardoor stabiel gedurende de levensloop. Dat geldt ook voor karakter. Als we zeggen dat iemand een moeilijk karakter heeft, dan geven we daarmee impliciet te kennen dat we het over een tamelijk stabiel onderdeel van de persoonlijkheid hebben, iets dat -helaas -niet zomaar te veranderen is. Karakter wordt gevormd door de confrontatie van het temperament van een persoon met diens sociale omgeving. Persoonlijkheid kan daarentegen beschouwd worden als "de gesocialiseerde vormgeving van het karakter die na de adolescentie vastere vormen aanneemt en het gevolg is van een samenspel van biologische, genetische en fysiologische factoren, van opvoeding, sociale omgeving, culturele context en ervaring". 2 Is persoonlijkheid gedurende de levensloop aan verandering onderhevig, of verandert alleen de wijze waarop persoonlijkheid tot uiting komt doordat de sociale en fysieke context van de persoon verandert? Er is nog een levendige discussie gaande op dit gebied, die in meerdere bijdragen van dit themanummer aan de orde zal komen. In het algemeen gaat men ervan uit dat de persoonlijkheidstrekken vanaf een jaar of dertig tamelijk stabiel zijn, maar er zijn verschillende wetenschappers die menen dat de context ook daarna nog wel degelijk de expressie van persoonlijkheidstrekken beïnvloedt. 3 Zou dit wellicht de reden zijn dat wij steeds meer op onze ouders gaan lijken? Zoals Stef Bos zingt: "Papa ik lijk steeds meer op jou. …….jouw woorden, ze liggen op mijn lippen en ik praat nu zoals jij vroeger praatte". Overigens is het goed om er bij stil te staan dat er verschillende vormen van stabiliteit kunnen worden bedoeld. Niet alleen de intrapersoonlijke stabiliteit, maar ook bij...
