Ototoxicity after platinum‑based chemotherapy in the treatment of melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy

Abstract: Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare infantile tumor that originates from mesenchymal-neuroectodermal cells, the treatment of which uses platinum derivatives that can affect hearing loss. The present study evaluated the long-term effects of ototoxicity following chemotherapy with cisplatin, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, teniposide and adriamycin in a 10-year-old patient after surgical removal of a MNTI tumor at the age of 8 months. Audiometric tests (high-frequency tonal audiometry, spe… Show more

“…Among them, two cases were duplicates [16,28] and four cases were excluded due to unclear histology [29][30][31][32]. Eight cases were excluded due to lack of information on the cytostatic drugs administered to patients [16,[33][34][35][36] or no data on the response to CHT [37,38]. In two patients, CHT was combined with RTX; in those cases, therefore, the response to CHT was impossible to define [23,39].…”

“…54.2% of these patients were treated with one of the cytostatic drugs (cisplatin or carboplatin) and 35.4% with both. Hearing should be tested during or immediately after chemotherapy in children [Hojan-Jezierska et al, 2020].…”
