Other malignant neoplasms associated with carcinoma of the thyroid: Thyroid carcinoma multiplex

Abstract: All patients with thyroid carcinoma seen at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute at Houston between March 1944 and June 1968 were studied to determine the incidence of a second malignant tumor either before or after the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. Additionally, those patients having thyroid cancer as the initial cancer were studied to determine their risk of developing a second malignant tumor. “…Wyse et al found that among 117 patients with thyroid carcinoma, a non-thyroid malignancy preceded that in the thyroid in 52, was found si-in~iltaneously in 21, and afterwards in 44. 51 Of 17 patients in whom we could determine temporal relationships with certainty, 9 had a non-parathyroid malignancy before the diagnosis of adenoma, in 5 the diagnoses were simultaneous, and 3 developed a malignancy after removal of the adenoma. Long-term observation of patients with parathyroid adenoma, thyroid carcinoma and thymoma, therefore, must be pursued after removal of the first tumor.…”

“…The acute complications of radioiodine therapy include nausea, vomiting, myelosuppression and sialoadenitis with occasional permanent alteration in the quantity and quality of saliva, leading to an increased frequency of tooth decay [25] have been reported following radioiodine therapy for thyroid carcinoma. A variety of other carcinomas have been reported in patients treated as adults for thyroid carcinoma, but the relationship, if any, between radioiodine exposure and the occurrence of these malignancies has not been detailed [26,27]. There have been no reports of breast carcinoma following treatment during adolescence for thyroid cancer with radioiodine.…”
