Osteotomy in Genioplasty by Piezosurgery

Abstract: Background: The chin is the most prominent and median sector of the lower third of the face giving harmony to nose and lips. The authors present the application of piezoelectric scalpel for the correction of different chin deformities. The distinctive characteristics of this device allow the authors to avoid or reduce the immediate genioplasty complications. Methods: Fifty-five patients of defective chin have been treated from January 2006 to April 2008. Intraoral genioplasty was performed during the correctio… Show more

“…We present a pathway of facial surgical accesses to be performed in order to remove permanent fillers previously injected with hidden access achieving two goals: permanent filler removal and facial aesthetic balance restoration. The proposed surgical accesses are already widely accepted and standardized in aesthetic surgical practice [20][21][22][23][24][25] and guarantee the possibility of filler removal with no need of a "direct approach" cutting "over the filler." This allows to have a minimal donor site and contextually lets to perform a lifting of the area "loaded" by the previously injected filler.…”

“…Therefore, genioplasty represents one of the most common auxiliary procedures and may be associated with corrective surgery for dentofacial dysmorphisms. However, care should be taken with mental nerve injuries, asymmetries, and intraoperative bleeding are the main immediate complications of mentoplasty, and to minimize these risks, the ultrasonic piezoelectric osteotomy with the selective cutting of the mineralized structure stands out [23]. Thus, in this respect, rhinoplasty and chin surgery are effective procedures to resolve the defects of underdevelopment of the nose and chin.…”

“…Other authors have demonstrated that minimally invasive esthetic treatments (e.g, dermal filler injection) may yield the same patient-perceived quality-of-life improvement, in terms of FACE-Q score, as esthetic surgical procedures. [34][35][36] We noted favorable patient attitudes toward cosmetic treatment of the complete profile rather than just one region of the face, as…”
