Osteoporosis in Orthopaedic Trauma Patients: A Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol

Abstract: Following a protocol for osteoporosis identification and initiation of treatment, almost one-third of patients were identified as being at high risk for osteoporosis in this orthopaedic trauma population. Specific components of the protocol included patient education and referral to the PCP, and nearly half of high-risk patients continued osteoporosis treatment at 12 months follow-up. Orthopaedic trauma surgeons can play a significant role in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in hospitalized patients… Show more

“…In another inpatient study conducted on all patients hospitalized with a fragility fracture, Collinge et al utilized calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) to stratify patients by low, moderate, and high risk for osteoporosis [11]. For patients identified as high risk, intervention was initiated with patient education and calcium and vitamin D therapy.…”

“…The opportunity to treat patients who have experienced low-energy trauma hip fracture, which is easy to diagnose in the absence of DXA measurements, should not be missed. Collinge et al (2008) examined the use of an alternative technology to measure BMD, quantitative ultrasound (QUS). QUS is measured at the heel, and is ideal for the orthopedic treatment setting because it can be taken at the bedside.…”

“…[1][2][3] Approximately one-third of patients admitted for an acute orthopaedic injury have osteoporosis. 4 Conversely, it is estimated that every year 2 million fractures occur secondary to osteoporosis, with derived costs exceeding $19 billion. These numbers are expected to increase by 50% over the next 20 years.…”
