Osteoporosis and mandibles

Abstract: Mandibular bone tissues on DPTs are statistically significantly different between osteoporotic and non-osteoporotic women. RBD of the mandible is statistically significantly lower in the osteoporotic group of women. We developed a simple method of common DPT analysis, which could represent a simple, inexpensive and readily available screening tool for osteoporosis.

“…2,[20][21][22] Osteoporosis is related to oral bone loss in animal studies on rats and it results in lower bone mineral density of women's mandibles. [1][2]7 In this study, when comparing with sham-operated group, serum E2 level in model group and experimental group decreased significantly, indicating ovariectomy was successful.…”

“…Menopause results in oral bone loss, [1][2][3] which can lead to loose tooth, tooth loss, and periodontal disease. [2][3][4] Kribbs 5 (1990) found women with osteoporosis were three times more susceptible for teeth loss than their healthy controls.…”

“…The reproductive age in female is over at the age of 45-50 when the menstruation cycle ends and sexual hormone rapidly decreases, well known as menopause 10. Estrogen deficiency plays a very important role on menopause as a cause of bone mass decrease 7.…”

“… 18 12 Radiographic density measurements (pixel intensity): This may be measured as metal equivalent thickness (aluminum or copper 25 in most studies), optical density (light transmittance through an area of the radiograph), 26 the blackness of the radiograph, or as relative density between different areas. 9 10 Simple visual estimation: The cortex is classified qualitatively into 3 categories based on simple visual estimations of the mandibular inferior cortex width: normal, intermediate (medium), and very thin. It is evaluated by observing the site (the inferior border of the mandible) with the naked eye.…”
