Osteomyelitis infection disguised as Reiter's syndrome in a child: A case report

Abstract: Reiter's syndrome (reactive arthritis) should always prompt a thorough clinical investigation of a potentially more serious disease condition in every pediatric patient and adults. It should always be regarded as a warning sign and not a disease. This is a case of a 16‐year‐old African boy with osteomyelitis presenting with symptoms of reactive arthritis (Reiter's syndrome).

“…Another common bone involvement in sickle cell disease patient is osteonecrosis. Osteonecrosis in sickle cell patients tends to affect a larger bone surface area than osteonecrosis due to other etiologies [ 18 ]. According to several works of literature, the increased risk of osteonecrosis of the femoral head in our patient group could be linked to an overall reduction in bone mineral density and marrow hyperplasia compared to the general population [ 18 , 19 ].…”

“…It is also worthwhile noting that although we did not include studies conducted on children in this systematic review, there could be a role of NTG in in treating LE especially in older children. However, before considering NTG in those cases, it will be important to consider osteomyelitis and Reiter's syndrome in children before making a clinical diagnosis of LE [ 16 , 17 ].…”
