Osteolysis: A Literature Review of Basic Science and Potential Computer‐Based Image Processing Detection Methods

Abstract: Osteolysis is one of the most prominent reasons of revision surgeries in total joint arthroplasty. This biological phenomenon is induced by wear particles and corrosion products that stimulate inflammatory biological response of surrounding tissues. The eventual responses of osteolysis are the activation of macrophages leading to bone resorption and prosthesis failure. Various factors are involved in the initiation of osteolysis from biological issues, design, material specifications, and model of the prosthes… Show more

“…erefore, a probable option to consider is to combine the specificity and accuracy of radiologists with the sensitivity of CAD systems and use these systems as assistants for operators with less experience at primary care centers [7,[10][11][12]. Accordingly, it is necessary to apply deep learning approaches and develop models with high accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity [68,69]. Future research should scrutinize the effectiveness of these methods and techniques.…”

“…Currently, Deep Learning (DL) is the base for many cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) applications [ 1 3 ]. DL can learn features at a high-level state with more complexity and abstraction than shallower neural networks.…”

“…Nowadays, supervised models based on deep learning (DL) are employed in numerous computer vision applications such as natural language processing (Aiman et al 2021;T. J. S.-H. Kumar 2020;Setiawan, Palit, and Setyati 2019), medical image processing (Saadi et al 2021;Valizadeh et al 2021), medical signal processing (P. Kumar, Das, and Halder 2021;Morabito et al 2018), and more. DL has dramatically increased the performance of a recognition system beyond the most recently published conventional machine learning (ML) strategies (Ali et al 2021;Saadi et al 2021), such as learning vector quantization (LVQ) (De Felice and Camastra 2018), decision tree (Sivakumar and Janakiraman 2022), and random forest (Rajagopal 2019).…”
