Purpose To provide a descriptive investigation about relevant features of the crested caracara's eye (Caracara plancus) and bony orbit, as well as provide data for ophthalmic tests. Methods Morphological observations and the following diagnostic tests were performed: Schirmer tear test (STT), conjunctival flora evaluation, corneal touch threshold (CTT), intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), B‐mode ocular biometry, palpebral fissure length (PFL), and corneal diameter (CD) in 19 healthy birds, plus two macerated skulls. Not all birds were used for each test. Results STT: 7.84 ± 3.05 mm/min; CTT: 2.46 ± 1.10 cm; IOP: 19.18 ± 3.07 mmHg; CCT: 0.31 ± 0.02 mm; PFL: 13.32 ± 1.06 mm; CD: 10.26 ± 2.43 mm; Axial globe length: 1.89 ± 0.06 cm; Anterior chamber depth: 0.27 ± 0.06 cm; Lens axial length: 4.55 ± 0.06 cm; Vitreous chamber depth: 1.2 ± 0.07 cm. The most frequent conjunctival bacterial isolates were Corynebacterium sp. (10/23.8%), Staphylococcus sp. (9/21.42%), Streptococcus sp. (7/16.6%), and E. coli (7/16.66%). The large lateral part of the palatine bone likely plays a role in the ventral protection of the globe against the impact of prey. Observed results are generally reflective of increased body mass compared to other Falconiformes, with values approaching those of similar sized Accipitriformes. Conclusions These data may help veterinarians recognize peculiar morphologic features and perform a more accurate diagnosis of eye diseases of this avian species.

RESUMO.As aves da ordem Psittaciformes estão entre as mais criadas como pet, o que consequentemente aumenta a procura por atendimento médico veterinário especializado em aves e, para tal, o estudo e conhecimento da anatomia destes animais se torna essencial. De outra forma, a morfologia craniana é fundamental na identificação de espécie de animais com características morfológicas externas semelhantes. Buscou-se obter dados referentes ao crânio de Diopsittaca nobilis, para contribuir com o conhecimento anatômico desta espécie. O presente estudo foi realizado com 3 crânios de Diopsittaca nobilis, que foram preparados através de dissecação e maceração controlada com água. Apesar do processo natural de fusão, puderam ser identificados ossos e estruturas do crânio com suas particularidades. Realizou-se também mensurações dos crânios, onde a média da largura máxima do crânio foi de 28,70mm e do comprimento do crânio sem a ranfoteca foi de 36,16mm. Os dados obtidos contribuem para a melhor caracterização da espécie.Palavras chave: Anatomia, psittacidae, crânio Anatomical and morphometric aspects of the Diopsittaca nobilis Linnaeus, 1758ABSTRACT. The birds of the order Psittaciformes are among the most created as pet, which consequently increases the demand for specialized veterinary care in birds and, for this, the study and knowledge of the anatomy of these animals becomes essential. Otherwise, cranial morphology is fundamental in the identification of species of animals with similar external morphological characteristics. We sought to obtain data regarding the skull of Diopsittaca nobilis, to contribute with the anatomical knowledge of this species. The present study was performed with 3 skulls of Diopsittaca nobilis, which were prepared by dissection and controlled maceration with water. Despite the natural process of fusion, bones and structures of the skull could be identified with their particularities. Measurements were also made of the skulls, where the mean maximum width of the skull was 28.70mm and the length of the skull without the ranogram was 36.16mm. The data obtained contribute to the better characterization of the species.

Obtaining craniometric data is key to establishing parameters that can help in the anatomic identification and understanding of species. The aim of the present study was to establish the craniometric data and describe the main skull bones and structures of Amazona aestiva, which has become common in veterinary clinics, originated from the legalized purchase or trafficking of animals. A total of 20 adult specimens were used, donated for studies by the Paraíba Wild Animal Screening Center (Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres da Paraíba (CETAS-PB)/IBAMA-PB, Brazil. The skulls were dissected and macerated with water. First were identified the frontal, maxilla, mandible, nasal, jugal and quadrate bones that served as a base to identify other bone structures that were then compared with the skull of other bird species already described in the literature, especially psitacids. Values were obtained by measuring with a digital pachymeter, and the maximum skull length was 63.0 mm, the maximum width 33.0 mm and the rhamphotheca was 33.8 mm long. No significant differences were observed between males and females and well developed cranial kinesis was a remarkable characteristic of the species. The data obtained serve as a base to identify and characterize the species. These data can also aid in the clinic, imaging and veterinary surgery.
