Osteoinduction by a Collagen Mineral Composite Combined With Isologous Bone Marrow in a Subcutaneous Rat Model

Abstract: In a subcutaneous implant rat model, Collagraft alone (n=8), Collagraft plus isologous bone marrow (n=8), and marrow alone (n=8) were evaluated. Twelve rats were euthanized at 11 days and 12 at 21 days. Explants were evaluated histologically for evidence of bone formation, and osteogenic activity was determined by an assay for alkaline phosphatase. Histological bone formation was absent in all groups at 11 days. At 21 days, in the Collagraft alone and bone marrow alone groups, no bone induction was noted. In c… Show more

“…In the main, an easy intraoperative handling and a good clinical application were observed in these studies as well. 17,[23][24][25][26][27][28] In human patients, ceramic composites have been applied, for example, in long bone fractures 29 or dental socket ridge preservation. 30 Given its moldable but plastic consistency, the Cerasorb Ortho Foam strips could also be useful for spinal fusions.…”

“…In addition, compared with OsteoSet ® (calcium sulfate), ProOsteon ® (ceramics), and DBX ® (demineralized bone matrix), Collagraft ® has a stronger ability to induce bone remodeling and bone tissue regeneration [ 195 , 196 ]. Especially when combined with bone marrow, osteogenesis is more obvious [ 197 ]. A prospective randomized controlled clinical study of 267 patients with long bone fractures found that Collagraft ® showed the same efficacy as autogenous iliac graft in the treatment of acute long bone fractures over 6–12 months [ 198 ].…”
