Osteoarthrosis: Analyze of the Molar Bite Force, Thickness and Masticatory Efficiency

Abstract: Osteoarthrosis is a disorder of synovial joints, resulting from destruction of the cartilage and subchondral bone. The present study is aimed to investigate the molar bite force, thickness and efficiency of the masseter and temporalis muscles of subjects with osteoarthrosis. A total of forty-eight subjects participated in the study. They were distributed into two groups: with osteoarthrosis (n=24) and asymptomatic controls (n=24). Subjects were analyzed on the basis of maximal molar bite force (right and left … Show more

“…The chewing muscles belong to the strongest muscles in the human body. During the chewing process, forces beyond 200 N emerge depending on the region within the oral cavity [ 20 , 21 ]. The highest pressure can be measured in the lateral region of the jaws since this is the chewing center [ 20 ].…”

“…Using 3D printing, the size of the pores can be adapted to a specific purpose. In regions such as the maxillary sinus, the scaffold’s stability might play a secondary role, whereas on the alveolar ridges, high stability is absolutely essential due to the high forces that emerge during the chewing process [ 20 , 21 ]. Considering these aspects, a defined pore size of CPC scaffolds for maxillofacial surgery could be of substantial clinical relevance.…”

“…To determine the point of placement of the electrode on the masseter muscle, palpation was performed in the area above 3 cm in anterosuperior direction of the lower jaw angle parallel to the lower third of the imaginary line connecting the lower jaw angle and the outer angle of the eye of the same side of the face. For the frontal part of the temporal muscle, palpation was performed along the anterior edge of the muscle parallel to the frontotemporal suture (12,15,16,17,18).…”

“…The individual was asked to bite the device three times, with maximum strength, with a two-minute interval between each measurement while alternating the side. This was supervised by a qualified professional (Palinkas et al, 2010;Righetti et al, 2020;Gomes et al, 2022).…”
