Osteitis in chronic rhinosinusitis: a review of the literature

Abstract: Osteitis involves inflammatory changes in the underlying bone that may lead to recalcitrant CRS. Osteitis is associated with worsened measures of disease severity such as CT, endoscopy, and olfactory scores, and affects the degree of improvement in quality-of-life measures after both medical and surgical treatment. Future studies directed at characterizing the underlying molecular mechanisms including earlier and precise identification may improve our ability to treat this significant aspect of CRS.

“…[384][385][386]401,402 CT imaging offers availability, good bony detail, and excellent sensitivity and specificity for detecting mucosal abnormalities and thickening. 401 Single photon emission CT (SPECT) has been suggested as another modality, but is costly, not readily available, and exposes the patient to larger doses of radiation.…”

“…Osteitis Osteitis is the involvement of the process of bony paranasal sinus in patients with CRS in which neoosteogenesis has occurred or as flat bone inflammation [33,34]. On the CT scan, the osteitic bone appears as heterogeneous, irregular bone with areas of growth and destruction [35].…”
