Ossification of the Human Fetal Ilium

Abstract: Ossification of the ilium is similar to that of a long bone. It possesses three cartilaginous epiphyses and one cartilaginous process. Moreover, it undergoes peculiar osteoclastic resorption, comparable with that of the cranium bones. Asymmetrical ossification of the ilium, haversian bone remodelling and apposition of chondroid tissue posterosuperiorly to the acetabulum most probably emphasize the importance of mechanical factors in the morphogenesis of the hip bone during fetal life.

“…1992). This initial appositional ossification is probably initiated in response to the early reflex contraction of the gluteal and iliacus muscles on the respective gluteal and pelvic surfaces of the ilium (Laurenson, 1964b; Delaere et al. 1992; Scheuer & Black, 2000).…”

“…As late as at the age of 16–18 years, these three bones fuse onto one coxal bone and contribute to a socket of the hip joint, i.e., the acetabulum. From a clinical point of view, the development of the hip joint presents a common interest in sports medicine, manual therapy, biomechanics, and anthropology [10, 12]. …”

“…Among the three constituents of the coxal bone, the ilium is the first to ossify at week 9 of gestation [9, 10]. The ossification process of the ischium and pubis commences as late as at weeks 18 and 20, respectively [10, 18].…”

“…The iliac center appears above the greater sciatic notch prenatally at about the ninth week and the ischial center appears in the body during the fourth and fifth months (Delaere et al, 1992). At birth, some parts of the pelvic bone are still cartilaginous: the iliac crest and the floor and inferior margin of the acetabulum.…”
