Osseous Autografts: III. Comparison of Osseous Coagulum‐Bone Blend Implants with Open Curettage.

Abstract: A clinical investigation was undertaken to compare regeneration of osseous defects following either osseous coagulum-bone blend grafts or open debridement procedures. Seventy-five sites in 28 patients were treated by the two procedures. The average fill in the 37 intraosseous defects treated by graft procedures (initial average depth = 4.22 mm, S.D. 1.73) was 2.98 mm, S.D. 1.44. The average fill in the 38 intraosseous lesions treated by open debridement procedure (initial average depth = 3.03 mm, S.D.0.80) was… Show more

“…Among the graft materials, autogenous bone grafts have been known to be the gold standard among bone replacement grafts because of their osteoconductive ability and cell viability, including osteoblasts and osteoprogenitor stem cells, which facilitate osteogenesis [20-22]. The use of autografts in IBDs has been reported to result in a reduction of PD and an increase of CAL values relative to OFD.…”

“…example, the space maintenance property can be enhanced by using more solid forms of bone grafts or by mixing particulate bone with fibrin, collagen, or other putty like material. 24,25 Other attempts to enhance the regenerative ability of bone grafts have included the addition of exogenous materials such as platelet enriched plasma or osteogenin now known as BMP-3. 26 Lastly, the osteoinductive effect of bone grafts can be enhanced by the addition of exogenous BMPs 7 or enamel matrix proteins.…”

“…2 , 4 , 8 , 9 The mean bone fill was 2.98 mm in the study of Froum et al 2 using bone blending and 3.5 mm in the study of Hiatt & Schallhorn 4 using intra-oral cancellus bone. In the present study, the mean bone fill using ABG was 2.20 ± 0.52 mm.…”
