Osmotic concentration in three races of honey bee, Apis mellifera L. under environmental conditions of arid zone

Abstract: Hemolymph osmolarity has great effect on honey bee health, especially in arid and semi-arid zones. It regulates water and nutrients in stressed tissues. Osmotic concentration in three races (, and) of was tested in central Saudi Arabia during spring and summer seasons in 2015. Newly emerged bee workers were first marked and later their hemolymph was extracted after intervals of 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 days. A significant positive correlation between age and osmolarity was found in all three races during spring… Show more

“…Due to the recent rise in antibiotic resistance, there has been an increased need for alternative treatment methods. 1,2 Honey offers a natural component that can be used directly in a clinical setting or incorporated into tissue-engineered scaffolds. 2 In this review, the overall properties of honey will be summarized, as well as its current use in wound healing and the potential of honey-based tissue-engineered products.…”

“…12 However, honey osmolarity varies greatly and consequently, as do the antimicrobial benefits, where an increased water content decreases these effects. 2 Honey is naturally acidic, generally possessing a pH ranging from 3.2 to 4.5. 6 Furthermore, the unique presence of methylglyoxal and dihydroxyacetone in Manuka honey has been observed, in vitro, to inhibit urease derived from jack beans.…”

“…In Saudi Arabia, the summer temperature is extremely high and often exceeds 45 °C, and the humidity is very low; in winter, the temperature can fall below 0 °C. (Ali et al 2017;Alqarni 2006;Alqarni et al 2011;Iqbal et al 2018b). Apis mellifera carnica Pollmann (AMC) and Apis mellifera ligustica Spinola (AML) are exotic bee races imported annually by the beekeepers to boost agricultural production (Alqarni et al 2014).…”
