Oseltamivir: A First Line Defense Against Swine Flu

Abstract: Oseltamivir (has known by its brand name 'Tamiflu') is a prodrug, requiring ester hydrolysis for conversion to the active form, Oseltamivir carboxylate. Oseltamivir was the first orally active neuraminidase inhibitor commercially developed by US based Gilead Sciences and is currently marketed by F. Hoffmann-La Roche (Roche). Oseltamivir is an antiviral drug which works by blocking the function of the viral neuraminidase protein. US FDA approved Oseltamivir for prophylaxis of uncomplicated influenza A and B. Cu… Show more

“…According to studies, LNT can reduce inflammatory damage by reducing inflammatory cytokine release and can also control inflammation by inhibiting the TLR4 signaling pathway, thereby acting as an antiviral ( Nishitani et al., 2013 ; Liu et al., 2019 ; Murphy et al., 2020 ). Based on these results, we speculate that LNT can treat influenza A. Oseltamivir is widely used as a neuraminidase inhibitor in the treatment of influenza A ( Agrawal et al., 2010 ). Many studies on anti-influenza effects and mechanisms of drugs chose the ICR mouse model ( Geng et al., 2019 ; Du et al., 2020 ; Yu et al., 2020 ; Cui et al., 2022 ).…”

“…It acts by competitive inhibition of neuraminidase enzyme which ultimately prevents the release of new virions (Lew et al, 2012). It is a prodrug and has to undergo ester hydrolysis to Oseltamivir carboxylate which is the active form (Agrawal et al, 2010).…”
