Oscillometry – The future of estimating pulmonary functions

Abstract: The prevalence of asthma is increasing rapidly, worldwide, due to changing gene-environment interactions. The rate of rise is more in resource poor nations due to lack of knowledge and non-availability of expertise. Monitoring of lung functions is mandatory for diagnosis and further management of asthmatic patients. Spirometry, the widely available investigation, is the gold standard test used for mapping pulmonary dynamicity. It has got its own limitations in the form of operational difficulties in children, … Show more

“…We also found that the area of reactance (Ax) and resonant frequency (Fres) in PTBS patients were higher as compared with other study groups. Ax, Fres, and X 5 act as sensitive parameters to determine the small airway obstruction and restrictive airway diseases [ 17 ]. The change in all of these IOS and spirometric parameters show that PTBS patients have significant impairment in the airway mechanics and have combined airway obstruction and restriction.…”

“…Oscillometry, a tidal breath-based technique, can be a suitable surrogate in the vulnerable population. [ 8 ] Only passive cooperation is needed to detect respiratory impedance in terms of resistance, reactance, and resonant frequency which makes it a practical option for preschoolers, elderly and in patients with neuromuscular weakness, post cardio-thoraco-abdominal surgery, on mechanical ventilation and duirng sleep. [ 8 ] This sound-signal–based technique has an extra edge over spirometry as being more sensitive for the detection of peripheral airway obstructive and pulmonary restrictive diseases.…”

“…waves with various frequencies transmitted from the mouth to the lungs during tidal breathing. 9,10 IOS has been used to estimate bronchodilator responses in asthmatic patients who were under drug treatments to evaluate the treatment control in these patients. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] However, whether IOS can be an alternative test to evaluate BDR in treatment-naïve adult patients with newly diagnosed asthma remains largely unclear.…”
